Intro:
This condition occurs when DVTs involve the main veins draining the legs and are not treated effectively. About 50% of these patients can be left with lifelong symptoms.
Symptoms:
Patients suffering from post-thrombotic syndrome can experience:
- Severe leg swelling
- Leg pain
- Venous ulceration
Risk Factors:
Risk factors for developing post thrombotic syndrome include:
- Extensive iliofemoral DVTs
- Incomplete treatment of occlusive DVTs
- Non-compliance with compression stocking use after DVT diagnosis
- Recurrent DVTs
Diagnosis:
Post thrombotic syndrome is often diagnosed based on a thorough history/clinical examination and a non-invasive venous ultrasound study.
Treatment:
Post thrombotic syndrome is often difficult to treat and requires a multidisciplinary team approach as well as an individualized treatment plan.
